Tips on maintaining carpets

Vacuuming

It is always better to vacuum more rather than less. Heavy traffic areas should be vacuumed frequently, perhaps each day or every other day depending on use. Once a week, it is a good policy to do a very thorough vacuuming of all your carpets. If using an upright make sure so the brush is fully in contact with the carpet. It’s easier to use a vacuum on a higher setting but it jus isn’t as effective. Don’t try to vacuum too fast as you move to and fro. It takes time for the vacuum to pull soil up from the bottom. It is a good idea to vacuum the same section from different directions as this will maximise the dirt removal. Another idea which helps is to from time to time rearrange furniture arrangement as this helps to cut down on wear or traffic patterns.

Upright vacuums with a beater bar or rotating brush will clean deeper and more effectively on carpet with a pile than a direct suction tub vacuum. It is extremely useful if it also has a detachable hose for getting into the corners and edges. Do check to make sure it is working properly. That the brush is turning and is not too worn down and that the belt is in good condition. If the brush is worn down it is no longer doing the job it was intended to do and needs to have new brushes installed. Check the dust bag; if it’s a cloth bag, empty it regularly and when possible remove it completely, take it outside and brush it thoroughly. If it’s a disposable paper bag the time to change it is when it’s half full. The fuller it becomes the less effective the vacuum becomes. A good vacuum will help to maintain the appearance and lengthen the life of your carpets. If you are considering changing your vacuum do call us and we show you the range of vacuums made by SEBO which we recommend.

Spots & Spills
Spots and spills should be taken care of immediately. Normally, the faster you take care of a spill, the less likely the spill has of becoming a permanent stain. In today’s world we are fortunate enough to have protectors on the market that can be applied either when the carpet is manufactured or after a carpet is cleaned. These protectors act as a soil retardant and are designed to repel soils and spills and keep them from penetrating carpet or upholstery fibres.

Flood Clean-up and Restoration
If your carpet is ever flooded from broken pipes, seepage or sewer backup, remember this is a common occurrence, if handled properly and promptly, it can be a simple resolution.
First, locate the source of the problem and act promptly to stop the water. Next, move furniture out of wet areas to prevent further damage (damage to furniture or furniture stain being released onto the carpet). If a piece of furniture can not be moved, try to place it higher up to get it out of standing water or place aluminium foil under legs to prevent staining of carpet and absorption of the water.
